| | Blue Italian Oven to Tableware by Spode
Introduced in the early 19th Century, as a successor to Japanese export porcelain, Spode's Oven to Tableware was immediately hailed as one of the very finest of its type. Now, nearly 200 years later, its appeal is as fresh as ever. Dense, impermeable and extremely hard, it is oven, microwave, freezer and dishwasher safe.
One of Spode's most famous patterns, Blue Italian has been in continuous production since 1816. The inspiration for Blue Italian came from a book of engravings showing exotic country scenes that were fashionable in the late 18th and 19th centuries. The central theme is believed to be the ruins of the Coliseum in Rome. The original watercolor is attributed to the Dutch artist, deMoucheron, with the dress of the figures putting it circa 1680. The pattern still requires the most skilled hand engraving to create its remarkable sense of space and dimension. For over 175 years, Blue Italian has been one of the world's best loved and most admired patterns, collected by museums and private connoisseurs.
